Lauri & Tayla are the cutest mother daughter duo… I love their story because it shows how important it is to know your family history and get those genes tested!
They made me smile so much, and seeing the two of them together made me so excited that my mom is coming to town TODAY!! Woo hoo!!
You girls are BEAUTIFUL inside and out and I am so happy you shared your story, Lauri.
- Why do you want to be a part of this project?
About five years ago I was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardio Myopathy. You know when you hear the stories of a basketball player running down the court, collapsing, and then dying? That’s what HCM is. Most people that have it don’t even know they do. Although I don’t show many symptoms, the scariest part is that I learned it is genetic. Because of this, both of my children had to be tested. About two years after my diagnosis, my daughter developed the condition. With this condition, competitive sports are no longer an option. Tayla was a high school soccer playing and received her diagnosis two weeks after her first year on varsity. She was told she could never play again. It changed her life forever.
- How have you been affected by Heart Health?
The real change has been for my daughter. To have to tell her that her athletic career was over even though she felt great…was the absolute hardest thing I have ever had to do. It physically crushed me.
- What do you want people to know?
Although Tayla and I could not have avoided developing HCM, I want people to know that awareness is everything. And even though Tayla could no longer play sports, we are thankful she was diagnosed before something horrible could happen.
- How has this all changed your life?
This has truly made us thankful for every minute, of every day. Life is made up of moments. We as a family enjoy everyone of them.
- What’s the most important thing in the world to you?
My family. No question.
- If this was your last week on earth, how would you live it?
With my husband and my kids. Probably cooking for them, telling stories and laughing.
- What are you passionate about?
Being a good mom, wife and person.
- What do you love about yourself?
My outgoing and stubborn personality! 🙂
- What is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?
My husband giving me the two most amazing kids in the whole world!
Thank you so much for sharing your story, Lauri. You are an amazing woman, and an incredible momma. Tayla, you’re going to go on to do incredible things. I know this has to be such an adjustment for you, but thank God you guys found this out early on. Life is precious, and I’m so glad you both were on top of this and are still here to tell others about this condition, and save more lives by getting this information out!
xo! T
